TSA Staffing Crisis Deepens as Hundreds Quit During Government Shutdown

TSA Staffing Crisis Deepens as Hundreds Quit During Government Shutdown

More than 300 TSA officers have resigned since a partial government shutdown began on February 14, intensifying security checkpoint delays at airports across the country.

The Department of Homeland Security — the only federal agency affected by this particular funding lapse — has left TSA agents working without pay for the third time in barely six months. The combination of consecutive shutdowns has pushed many officers to their breaking point.

The consequences are visible at checkpoints nationwide. Wait times stretched to three and four hours at major hubs last weekend, including Houston, Atlanta, New Orleans, and Charlotte. Thursday, March 13 was the busiest checkpoint day since early January, with Austin-Bergstrom seeing two-hour backups before dawn and Philadelphia International consolidating terminal operations.

Seven major airlines — American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, and Airlines for America — sent a joint statement to Congress, noting that TSA officers "just received $0 paychecks" and face impossible choices between working and paying rent.

Airport officials are urging travelers to arrive significantly earlier than usual, check individual airport websites for real-time wait data, and consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. Global Entry processing resumed Wednesday after a 17-day suspension.

Spring break travel volumes are compounding the strain. With no funding resolution in sight, Todd Hauptli of the American Association of Airport Executives warned: "People should be prepared for longer lines as this drags out."
