American Express Global Business Travel Acquired by Long Lake for $6.3 Billion

Long Lake Management, a private equity firm backed by General Catalyst and Alpha Wave, agreed to acquire American Express Global Business Travel for $6.3 billion in cash. The deal was announced May 4 and is expected to close in the second half of 2026.

Amex GBT is the largest corporate travel management company in the world, handling roughly $30 billion in annual booking volume across 140 countries. American Express owns a minority stake in the public company and licenses its brand, an arrangement that will continue under the new ownership.

The acquisition price represents a meaningful premium over Amex GBT's share price before deal speculation began in March. Long Lake has signaled plans to invest in artificial intelligence tooling, supplier integrations, and the company's traveler-care services.

The deal reflects broader consolidation in corporate travel as the industry adapts to hybrid work patterns and AI-driven booking tools. Independent competitors including BCD Travel and CWT are exploring similar transactions, with private equity capital reentering the sector.

For individual travelers, the immediate impact is minimal. Corporate accounts will continue to use existing booking platforms without interruption. Longer term, the change in ownership may accelerate AI-assisted itinerary tools and shift the balance of preferred supplier agreements with hotels and airlines.
