United Inaugurates Newark to Split Service With the Boeing 767-300ER
United Airlines operated its first nonstop flight between Newark Liberty International Airport and Split, Croatia, on April 30, launching seasonal service to one of the Adriatic coast's most-visited gateways.
The route runs three times weekly through October on the 167-seat Boeing 767-300ER, configured in a high-premium layout with 46 lie-flat business class seats, 22 Premium Plus, and standard economy. Flying time runs about 9 hours 30 minutes eastbound and 10 hours 15 minutes westbound.
Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and a primary entry point for travelers heading to Hvar, Brac, and the Dalmatian coastal islands. United is positioning the route alongside its existing Dubrovnik service, with both gateways serving customers headed to different stretches of the coastline and avoiding the long ferry connections required when arriving via Zagreb.
Pre-pandemic, U.S. travelers reached Split by connecting through Frankfurt, Munich, or Istanbul. Direct service shortens the trip by three to four hours and brings the city within range of a long-weekend visit during the September shoulder season, when prices and crowds both drop.
Inaugural round-trip fares started around $1,250 in main cabin and just under $4,800 in business class. Award seats are bookable for 70,000 MileagePlus miles each way in main cabin and 130,000 miles in business during shoulder weeks, with availability tighter for July and August departures.
