JetBlue Explores Potential Merger With Alaska Airlines, Southwest, or United
JetBlue Airways has engaged financial advisers to explore a potential merger, with three carriers reportedly in the running: Alaska Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines.
The discussions follow JetBlue's failed attempt to acquire Spirit Airlines, which was blocked by a federal judge in 2024 on antitrust grounds. Spirit subsequently filed for bankruptcy and restructured as a smaller carrier.
An Alaska-JetBlue combination would create a coast-to-coast network, pairing JetBlue's strength in the Northeast and Caribbean with Alaska's West Coast and Hawaii presence. Alaska is already absorbing Hawaiian Airlines, with operational integration set for April 22.
A Southwest deal would merge two carriers with large domestic footprints but different business models — Southwest's point-to-point network versus JetBlue's focus city strategy. United, the largest of the three suitors, would gain JetBlue's premium Mint service and slot holdings at JFK and Boston Logan.
No formal offer has been made. Any deal would face intense regulatory scrutiny given the current administration's track record of blocking airline consolidation. For travelers, the outcome could reshape loyalty programs, route networks, and competition on key East Coast corridors.
