Spring Break Travel Is No Longer a Single Week — and Airlines Are Adjusting
The traditional one-week spring break window has fractured into a six-week travel surge spanning mid-March through late April, and airlines are reshaping capacity to match.
Data from Google Flights shows multiple demand peaks this year rather than a single spike. Top pickup days are forecast for April 9, April 17, and April 23-24, reflecting staggered school calendars across the country.
Three out of five Gen Z and millennial travelers plan to take a spring break trip in 2026, up 19 percent from last year. Florida destinations dominate, accounting for 37 of the top 51 domestic search results, with Key West leading interest across 17 states.
Hertz reports that one in three renters is booking specifically for road trips, fueled by gas prices sitting near five-year lows at $2.82 per gallon nationally.
The shift benefits travelers willing to be flexible. Domestic round-trip fares are averaging $340, down 7 percent year-over-year, though hotel prices are up 3 percent domestically and 7 percent internationally.
