Chicago Midway runway closure may disrupt flights through mid-November
Chicago Midway's Runway 22L is closed for repairs, with work expected to finish by mid-November, according to ABC7 Chicago's October 20 report. The closure could cause flight delays and cancellations.
Crews are repairing a bed of crushable material at the runway's departure end. The system helps stop aircraft that overshoot the runway and was damaged by recent aircraft activity, the city said.
The impact on flights will depend on airline schedules and weather, particularly wind direction. Those conditions affect how Midway's four-runway network can handle arrivals and departures.
Southwest told Simple Flying it is coordinating with the city and the Federal Aviation Administration to limit delays when unfavorable winds reduce runway capacity.
For upcoming trips, the city asks passengers to check flight status and contact their airline before heading to Midway. Southwest recommends its app for real-time flight information.
