Matt's Off Road Recovery: The Utah Tow Operator Who Built a YouTube Empire Near Zion National Park

In the sun-scorched, rugged terrain of Southern Utah, a brand built on wholesome adventure and mechanical ingenuity has captivated nearly two million YouTube subscribers. Matt's Off Road Recovery, fronted by Matthew "Matt" David Wetzel, presents a simple, compelling proposition: rescuing stranded vehicles from the unforgiving landscapes near Zion National Park. Behind the family-friendly content of dusty trails and daring recoveries sits a diversified business that's expanded far beyond online video — and weathered a criminal conviction for insurance fraud along the way.

Matt Wetzel's Background: From Roofing to Towing to YouTube

Matthew David Wetzel's roots run deep in Washington County, Utah. Raised on a family farm involved in custom harvesting, his early life was steeped in mechanics and heavy equipment. Before ever hooking a tow strap to a stranded Jeep, Wetzel spent 12 years in the roofing industry, eventually owning his own business. Around 2009, he pivoted, founding Red Ryder Towing. The real expansion came in 2013, when he acquired Winder Towing, an established local business that became the operational backbone of his enterprise.

The venture that redefined his career launched on March 28, 2019: the Matt's Off Road Recovery YouTube channel. Documenting specialized off-road rescues, the channel found an immediate audience. Its appeal was built on a cast of characters — Wetzel, his wife Jaymie, their four sons Rudy, Kaulin, Rhett, and Carter, and the "infamous Ed with his positive outlook on life." The fleet of custom vehicles became stars in their own right, none more so than the heavily modified Jeep Cherokee XJ known as the "Yellow Banana."

As viewership exploded, so did project ambition. A multi-part series starting in 2020 chronicled the transformation of a 1961 Corvair wagon into a one-of-a-kind off-road machine dubbed the "MORRVAIR," which officially debuted in May 2021. Between 2022 and 2023, key members including Matt's son Rudy Wetzel and fabricator Tom Tom departed to launch their own successful channels — "Rudy's Adventure and Design" and "Tom Tom's Shop" — creating a spinoff effect that positioned the main channel as an incubator for new talent in the automotive niche.

Matt's Off Road Recovery Content: Rescues, Builds, and Family Adventure

The core content is documentary-style depiction of real-world problems. A vehicle is hopelessly stuck in sand, mud, or perched on a cliffside, and Wetzel's team arrives to engineer a solution. The defining characteristic is its calm, positive, and family-oriented approach — a deliberate choice that's broadened the audience far beyond hardcore off-road enthusiasts. Drama comes from the mechanical challenge, not interpersonal conflict.

Beyond rescues, the channel features extensive multi-part build series that deep-dive into the design, fabrication, and testing of unique rigs. Projects like the MORRVAIR and the "Bombi" snowcat function as long-form content that deepens engagement and showcases technical expertise.

How Matt's Off Road Recovery Makes Money: Merch, App, Events, and Affiliates

While YouTube ads provide a foundation, the financial operation extends well beyond. The business operates through MATT'S OFF ROAD RECOVERY ADVENTURES, LLC, which holds key trademarks filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office: "MATT'S RECOVERY ROPE" (2020), "MATT'S OFF-ROAD RECOVERY" (2021), and "MATT'S OFF-ROAD GAMES" (2024).

Revenue comes from interconnected ventures:

  • E-commerce: The store at mattsoffroadrecovery.com sells apparel, the "Tool Burrito" tool roll, signature recovery gear co-developed with brands (like "Matt's Recovery Rope" with Yankum Ropes), and die-cast scale models of famous vehicles.
  • Subscription App: Promoted via morrstuff.com, a premium content app offers tiered memberships from the free "2x4 Free Wheelin'" to the $100/month "4x4 Fully Locked" (all digital content + physical care packages + VIP event access). Intermediate tiers: $8.95/month "4x4 Open Diff" and $17.95/month "4x4 Limited Slip", unlocking exclusive series like "Not Safe for YouTube" and merch discounts.
  • Live Events: "Matt's Off Road Games" is an annual multi-day festival at Sand Hollow State Park in Hurricane, Utah. Revenue comes from ticket sales (2025 adult tickets: $124.99), sponsorships, and on-site sales. The event features off-road competitions, a vendor show, and meet-and-greets.
  • Affiliate Partnerships: The promo code "MORR" offers discounts from industry brands including Rock Slide Engineering, Barnes 4WD, Yukon Gear & Axle, Rugged Radio, and Miller Welders. A deal with Golen Engines provides a $200 discount.

Matt's Off Road Recovery Collaborations

Wetzel actively collaborates within the automotive YouTube community. Frequent work with Utah-based creators like Robby Layton and Fab Rats cross-promotes audiences. Layton's shop was instrumental in rebuilding the Yellow Banana and the Bombi snowcat. A dedicated playlist of over 20 collaboration videos exists with BleepinJeep. Fellow recovery channel Trail Mater and farming influencer Laura Farms have competed in the Off Road Games. Wetzel has appeared on podcasts including Derek Bieri's "In the Aisles" for Vice Grip Garage.

Matt Wetzel's Insurance Fraud Conviction

The brand's most significant public challenge was a criminal case for insurance fraud. An investigation by the Utah Insurance Fraud Division found that between January 2019 and August 2020, Winder Towing submitted over $15,000 in claims to AAA containing "known material misrepresentations."

The allegations were specific. In one instance, Winder Towing delivered construction materials for a client and, instead of receiving direct payment, orchestrated a scheme where the client filed three separate vehicle towing claims with AAA, totaling $8,400. In another, to circumvent AAA policies that don't cover off-road vehicles, a claim for a Polaris RZR recovery — an event documented on the YouTube channel — was filed using a friend's membership, falsely stating a covered truck had been rescued.

Charged in December 2021 with a second-degree felony, Wetzel pleaded "no contest" on February 22, 2022, to a reduced charge of false or fraudulent insurance claim, a class A misdemeanor. He was sentenced to 18 months of probation and ordered to pay $15,328 in restitution to AAA, plus $1,745 in fines.

Matt's Off Road Recovery Philanthropy

The brand is extensively involved in charitable fundraising. A 2022 holiday campaign raised $60,000 for the DOVE Center, a Southern Utah domestic abuse support organization, by donating 100% of proceeds from a special edition "Midnight Morrvair" die-cast model. The annual Off Road Games event serves as a major fundraising platform, with proceeds benefiting Utah Public Lands Alliance (UPLA), Washington County Search and Rescue, the American Legion, and the Hurricane Valley Fire District. The brand has also raised $11,000 for the OneWish Foundation and supported the local All Abilities Park.

Matt's Off Road Recovery Today

Matt's Off Road Recovery is a complex success story in creator media. It's simultaneously a purveyor of wholesome, family-friendly adventure and a multi-pronged business that's navigated a significant legal failing. By building a system of e-commerce, subscriptions, and live events, Matthew Wetzel has constructed a brand that's not only resilient but thriving. The business has separated its controversial past within the legacy Winder Towing company while propelling its media-focused future through the newer LLC.
