Itchy Boots: The Dutch Geologist Who Solo Motorcycled 180,000km Across 70+ Countries

Noraly Schoenmaker, a former exploration geologist with a Master of Science degree, has ridden over 180,000 kilometers solo across more than 70 countries. She's the architect and sole operator of Itchy Boots, a digital media brand and YouTube channel that's captivated a global audience — 2.89 million subscribers and over 635 million views. Her story isn't one of a casual influencer, but of a meticulous strategist who transformed personal crisis into a multi-faceted business built on radical independence, unscripted authenticity, and the relentless forward momentum of a motorcycle.

Noraly Schoenmaker's Background: Geochemistry to Motorcycle Travel Creator

Born on June 30, 1987, Schoenmaker is a Dutch national whose early career was firmly rooted in science. At 23, she completed her MSc. in Geochemistry at Utrecht University and was on track for a Ph.D., traveling to Australia to collect rock samples. The first major pivot came during a planned three-month break in India, where she decided to abandon her doctoral studies for a life of travel.

This led to demanding international jobs that unknowingly served as training. She spent six months as an exploration geologist in the Australian gold mining industry, using earnings to fund a two-year solo backpacking expedition through Southeast Asia, the Americas, and East Africa. With funds depleted, she then spent five years with an international dredging company on projects in the Bahamas, Brazil, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, and Panama. These years cultivated the logistical skills and resilience essential for her future.

The catalyst for "Itchy Boots" was a profound personal rupture. In 2018, Schoenmaker discovered her long-term partner had been unfaithful. In July 2018, she quit her job, sold her house and belongings, and left for India. Her initial plan was a travel blog. While in Manali, she rented a motorcycle, reigniting a passion from getting her license in 2015. She bought a GoPro and a Royal Enfield Himalayan, which she christened "Basanti." On November 21, 2018, the Itchy Boots YouTube channel launched — transforming heartbreak into a public narrative of renewal.

Growth mirrored her travels. Her first season in Asia cultivated a large Indian viewership. As she pushed through the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, the audience diversified. The Patagonia-to-Alaska journey (Season 4) triggered explosive growth — one million subscribers gained in a single year, driven largely by the United States.

Itchy Boots Content: No Voice-Overs, Just Real-Time Motorcycle Travel

The core of the brand is Schoenmaker's distinct vlogging style. Episodes, released Wednesdays and Sundays, are defined by a deliberate production choice: no post-production voice-overs. She narrates exclusively in the moment, speaking to the camera while riding or during stops. This creates raw, unscripted immediacy — the viewer feels present on the journey.

Content revolves around the granular realities of solo overland travel: constant mechanical problem-solving, complex cross-cultural encounters, and bureaucratic tedium of border crossings. Over the years, production has evolved from basic GoPro footage to a setup incorporating high-quality cameras and sweeping drone cinematography.

How Itchy Boots Makes Money: Merch, Courses, Bestselling Book, and Direct Membership

Schoenmaker has built a diversified business extending well beyond YouTube ads. Her website, itchyboots.com, serves as the central hub.

A merchandise store at itchyboots.store sells branded apparel (sweaters, t-shirts, caps, scarves) with notes on international shipping logistics. The Itchy Boots Academy offers online courses: "Motorcycle Vlogging 101" and "Motorcycle Vlogging Advanced" (priced at €49.95).

Her biggest mainstream success: the memoir Free Ride: Heartbreak, Courage, and the 20,000-Mile Motorcycle Journey That Changed My Life, published by Atria Books (Simon & Schuster) on June 3, 2025. It became an Instant New York Times Bestseller. A Dutch version, Keerpunt, was also released. A second English book covering Patagonia to Alaska is in development.

Rather than Patreon, Schoenmaker runs a proprietary membership system on her website ("Become an #itchybooter") for exclusive content. Brand ambassadorships include REV'IT! (motorcycle apparel), Mosko Moto (luggage), and Airoh (helmets, from Season 8).

Itchy Boots Collaborations: Mostly Solo by Design

Schoenmaker's collaboration strategy is disciplined, protecting her "solo traveler" brand. There's near-total absence of on-screen collaborations with other YouTubers. One rare documented exception: an impromptu encounter with fellow motovlogger Charly Sinewan at a Central American border crossing.

She engages with the industry through professional channels: guest on podcasts like Adventure Rider Radio and The Storytelling University, and events like the ABR (Adventure Bike Rider) Festival.

Itchy Boots: Critical Acclaim, Bike Thefts, and a Tanzania Crash

Her book Free Ride earned critical acclaim. BBC, Publishers Weekly, and Kirkus Reviews praised its "unflinching honesty" and "from-the-heart prose."

In April 2025, she made headlines by canceling her planned June 2025 U.S. book tour. She cited feeling unsafe traveling to the U.S. due to immigration policies involving social media scrutiny of travelers. With recent vlogs from Yemen, she expressed concern over being detained, deported, and banned for up to a decade.

She's survived two motorcycle thefts, both resolved using a hidden Apple AirTag. In mid-November 2024, her 1987 Yamaha Ténéré, "Frankie," was stolen in Erbil, Iraq. She tracked it to a nearby location where thieves had abandoned it after cutting the wiring loom in a failed start attempt; police arrested a suspect. In June 2025 in Swansea, Wales, her bike was taken from a hotel parking lot and located hidden in nearby bushes.

Her most severe incident came in May 2024: a crash on a dirt road in Tanzania after hitting an unseen rut, resulting in a broken collarbone and toe. Post-surgical complications including a collapsed lung required medical evacuation to the Netherlands for lengthy recovery. While reception is overwhelmingly positive, she's been the target of online misogyny and isolated critiques of some interactions as "ego-centered" or having a "colonialist attitude."

Itchy Boots Philanthropy

In 2023, Schoenmaker partnered with Two Wheels for Life, a charity using motorcycles to deliver healthcare to remote African communities. Inspired by firsthand observations of how critical two-wheeled transport is in the regions she traversed, she auctioned a used Arai helmet from her West Africa journey, with all proceeds going to the organization.

Itchy Boots Today

Currently, Schoenmaker's back on the road for her eighth season, "The Road to the East," riding "Frankie," a vintage 1987 Yamaha Ténéré XT600Z that's the same age as her. Her long-term goal: reach Japan. She's evolved from a geochemist seeking escape from heartbreak into the leader of a self-owned media brand. As a solo adventurer, bestselling author, and entrepreneur, she's proven that the most compelling narratives aren't scripted, but lived — one kilometer at a time.
