About

Catherine Gregory is an American photographer and travel vlogger who has cultivated a significant following by documenting her full-time nomadic life. Through her YouTube channel, also named Catherine Gregory, she presents a narrative not of necessity, but of deliberate choice—a carefully planned departure from a 12-year corporate career into a life of solo travel, backpacking, and hiking across the American West. Her work, characterized by high-quality landscape cinematography and personal reflection, has positioned her as a notable figure in the digital nomad and outdoor adventure community.

Catherine Gregory: History and Growth

Raised in Southern California, Gregory's early creative pursuits were in freelance surf photography, a passion influenced by her friend, the legendary surf photographer Dan Merkel. As early as 2013, Merkel had suggested she leave her conventional job to pursue photography and travel full-time. For years, however, she remained in a corporate role she would later describe as the "rat race."

A significant turning point occurred in 2015 when Gregory, a self-described "beach girl," says she "discovered the mountains." This newfound passion for hiking and backpacking began to reshape her priorities. By 2018, driven by a desire to travel while in peak physical health and to avoid future regret, she began to seriously plan her exit from conventional life. In 2019, she executed that plan, selling most of her possessions, purchasing a truck and a camper, and embarking on her journey as a full-time traveler.

Her YouTube channel was technically created on October 31, 2011, but its current iteration began in earnest with her lifestyle change. To centralize her new brand, she launched her companion website, catherinegregoryadventures.com, on December 13, 2019. Over more than a decade on the platform, she has amassed a subscriber base of 118,000, with her 408 videos generating over 20.4 million total views.

Catherine Gregory's Content and Style

Gregory's content centers on long-form vlogs, typically 20 to 40 minutes in length, that document her solo adventures. Her initial three years on the road were spent living full-time in a truck camper, a phase she extensively documented. Around 2022, she transitioned to a travel trailer, which now serves as her mobile home and base of operations.

Her videos chronicle backpacking and hiking expeditions through national parks and wilderness areas, from the Eastern Sierra to Canadian destinations like Water Lakes and Jasper National Parks. The visual style is defined by cinematic landscape shots captured with her primary camera, a Sony a6400, and a Rode Wireless Go microphone for audio. A key element of her brand was solidified in a March 7, 2021, video titled "Why I Chose NOMAD LIFE." In it, she explicitly contrasts her journey with the narrative of the film Nomadland, stating that she chose her lifestyle proactively rather than being forced into it by economic hardship. This framing of empowerment and deliberate choice is a cornerstone of her brand's appeal.

How Catherine Gregory Makes Money

Gregory has constructed a diversified and transparent business model to sustain her travels and content creation. The architecture relies on a multi-pronged revenue strategy that combines direct audience support, strategic sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and e-commerce.

Direct financial support is solicited through a Patreon page under the name "Cat Adventures." For viewers preferring one-time contributions, she provides specific and consistent handles for PayPal ([email protected]), Venmo (@Catherine-Gregory-12), and Zelle ([email protected]).

Brand sponsorships form a significant revenue stream. She has established recurring partnerships with companies like AG1 (Athletic Greens) and RV Mattress by Brooklyn Bedding, often featuring dedicated sponsor segments with custom URLs and discount codes, such as "Catherine" for 30% off a mattress.

Her website, CatherineGregoryAdventures.com, functions as an e-commerce hub. Through it, she sells prints of her photography and branded merchandise, including t-shirts, tote bags, and mugs.

Finally, as a participant in the Amazon Associates program, Gregory uses affiliate marketing by publishing exhaustive lists of her equipment. Her video descriptions contain dozens of links to her specific gear, which ranges from high-end camera equipment like her Sony a6400 to specialized outdoor apparel from brands such as Patagonia, Prana, The North Face, and Darn Tough, and essential backpacking items like her Osprey Aura 65 Liter backpack and Big Agnes tents.

Catherine Gregory's Collaborations

Collaboration is a core component of Gregory's content strategy, and she is an active participant in the online outdoor creator community. Her most frequent collaborator is Joey Coconato, who runs the backpacking channel @MyOwnFrontier. They have filmed numerous challenging multi-day treks together in locations like the Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park, and the Canadian Rockies, with Gregory acknowledging Coconato's contribution of footage to her videos.

She also collaborates with her niece, Christine, the creator behind the channel @nomad_unknown. Their shared focus on solo female travel and backpacking has led to joint videos documenting trips like a thru-hike of the Trans-Catalina Trail and an expedition in Olympic National Park.

A significant milestone in her career was her appearance on the @CheapRVliving channel, hosted by Bob Wells, one of the most influential figures in the van life movement. The interview and tour of her truck camper served as an important validation of her status within the broader nomadic community.

Catherine Gregory: Public Reception

Catherine Gregory's channel has been recognized within its niche, earning a spot on Feedspot's curated list of "Solo Travel YouTube Channels." Her public reception is overwhelmingly positive, with no identified platform sanctions or direct controversies.

However, due to the commonality of her name, she has been publicly confused with several other individuals. The most prominent case of misattribution involves a widely reported 2017 incident at the University of Connecticut. On November 28, 2017, a different Catherine Gregory, then an Associate Director of Career Services and Advising at Quinebaug Valley Community College (QVCC) in Connecticut, was involved in a protest at a speech. The vlogger Catherine Gregory, whose public travel career did not begin until 2019, has no connection to this event. Research definitively separates her from this and other namesakes, including an Australian classical flutist, a UK-based communications professional, and a nurse researcher.

Her brand, built on the principle of proactive life design, resonates with a growing audience interested in alternative lifestyles, solo travel, and the landscapes of the American West.
