About

At first glance, the two worlds could not be more different. One is a landscape of decay: the haunting, water-stained corridors of a theme park left to rot after Hurricane Katrina, the cavernous, silent sales floors of a bankrupt department store, the rusting hull of a forgotten ocean liner. The other is a world of curated opulence: a two-story Grand Duplex Suite aboard the Queen Mary 2, the gilded lobby of The Ritz London, a concierge-level cabin on the newest Disney cruise ship. Yet, both of these worlds are narrated by the same calm, authoritative voice, that of Jake Williams, the Canadian filmmaker and digital entrepreneur who has methodically built a multi-platform media business on the foundations of modern ruins and corporate failure. His primary channel, Bright Sun Films, boasts over 1.5 million subscribers; its spin-off, Bright Sun Travels, reflects the success of the entire operation.

Bright Sun Travels: Origins and Growth

The architect of this digital operation is Jake Williams, born April 21, 1998. Raised in Welland, Ontario, and now based in Hamilton, Williams' initial career path seemed conventional. He planned to attend school for business marketing, envisioning a future in business administration. His journey into filmmaking began much earlier, making videos around the age of 10 and launching his first YouTube channel during his first year of high school. The catalyst, he has stated, was watching other creators' videos about abandoned locations.

That channel, founded on July 10, 2012, was originally known as "Bright Sun Gaming," a product of its era focused on vlogs and video game content. A critical strategic pivot occurred in February 2016, when Williams rebranded to "Bright Sun Films" and shifted entirely to short-form documentaries. By May 2018, shortly after graduating high school, he had cultivated an audience of over 400,000 subscribers and made the entrepreneurial choice to forgo college and pursue his channel full-time. He had successfully established a brand and secured a strong position in a niche he helped define.

Bright Sun Travels Content and Style

The "Bright Sun" brand is a structured collection of distinct media channels. The flagship, Bright Sun Films, is built upon three well-defined content pillars. The "Abandoned" series explores decaying and defunct locations, from the Hard Rock Park theme park to the massive ocean liner RMS Queen Elizabeth. His "Bankrupt" series offers deep-dive analyses of corporate failures like Pan Am and Bed Bath & Beyond. The "Cancelled" series dissects ambitious projects that never came to fruition, such as the Dubailand resort complex and the Chicago Spire.

The financial success of this primary channel enabled a strategic brand extension. On August 30, 2022, Williams launched Bright Sun Travels. The move was a calculated decision to segment his growing volume of travel content. With the stated mission of providing "Quality, Honest Travel Reviews," the channel features high-production video essays on luxury experiences, from the Four Seasons Resort Orlando to the Disney Treasure cruise ship. A tertiary channel, simply named "Jake Williams," serves as an outlet for behind-the-scenes footage and vlogs.

How Bright Sun Travels Makes Money

Williams operates not merely as a content creator, but as the head of a diversified media company. Revenue streams extend far beyond platform ad revenue. A key component is direct audience support through Patreon, where approximately 404 patrons contribute an estimated $323 to $4,000 per month for perks like early access to videos. This is supplemented by YouTube's "Join" button for channel memberships.

An e-commerce operation serves as another pillar. The main storefront, shopbrightsunfilms.com, powered by Fourthwall, offers merchandise deeply connected to the channel's culture. Instead of generic logos, apparel features phrases like "Dead Mall," "2008 Recession Support Group," and "Abandoned Ship Convention." Integrated sponsorships with brands like Storyblocks, Airalo, Skillshare, and NordVPN are a regular feature in his videos.

Bright Sun Travels' Network

Williams has actively cultivated a professional network. He has collaborated with prominent creators in the urban exploration and historical documentary space, including Dan Bell, Uncharted Travel, and Kevin Perjurer of the popular channel Defunctland. A notable project was a video on the historic ocean liner SS United States, produced in collaboration with the SS United States Conservancy. The video featured an interview with the conservancy's president, Susan Gibbs, and granted Williams exclusive access to tour the ship. Bright Sun Films was nominated for a Shorty Award in the "YouTube Ensemble" category at the 11th Annual Awards.

Bright Sun Travels: Public Reception and Closed for Storm

The most ambitious project of Williams' career to date is Closed for Storm, his 2020 feature-length documentary on the Six Flags New Orleans theme park, abandoned since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Williams self-funded the project, serving as its director, writer, and narrator, and brought on fellow YouTubers Dan Bell and Darren Mercer as Executive Producers. The film premiered at the New Orleans Film Festival on November 7, 2020, before securing a distribution deal with Gravitas Ventures for a wide video-on-demand release in July 2021.

Reception was sharply divided, highlighting the cultural gap between YouTube audiences and professional film critics. While many praised its comprehensive history and use of archival footage, some critics found it repetitive. One particularly negative review labeled the film "youtuber bad," citing an amateurish execution and lack of narrative focus. Another critique pointed specifically to Williams' on-camera reactions during exploration segments—exclamations like "Holy Christ"—as "annoyingly intrusive," a style that builds a loyal YouTube following but can be viewed as unprofessional in a traditional documentary context.

Bright Sun Travels Today

Jake Williams has successfully parlayed a high school hobby into a robust, multi-brand media business. His journey from "Bright Sun Gaming" to "Bright Sun Films" demonstrates a keen strategic mind, capable of identifying and dominating a high-value content niche. The expansion into luxury travel with "Bright Sun Travels" is a direct reflection of the financial success built on documenting failure and decay. Through a diversified business model and an ambitious leap into feature filmmaking with Closed for Storm, Williams exemplifies a new generation of media entrepreneurs building entire production companies and careers outside of legacy institutions.
