United MileagePlus Cuts Basic Economy Earning to Zero on April 2

United MileagePlus Cuts Basic Economy Earning to Zero on April 2

United Airlines' updated MileagePlus earning rules took effect April 2, ending mileage accrual on most basic economy fares and cutting the base earning rate for general members without a co-branded credit card.

Under the new structure, general members earn three miles per dollar spent on eligible fares, down from five. Members holding a United credit card earn six miles per dollar, the rate that previously applied to all general members. Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K members retain their multipliers.

The most contested change is the removal of mileage and Premier qualifying point earning on basic economy tickets for members without status or a United credit card. United frames the move as encouraging customers to choose higher fare classes or the airline's credit card, while travel forums have called it a sharp devaluation for occasional flyers.

The shift brings United in line with American Airlines, which made a similar change effective March 1 for AAdvantage. Delta SkyMiles still awards miles on its basic economy product, leaving Delta as the only major U.S. legacy carrier with that benefit intact.

For travelers planning summer trips, the practical takeaway is to model the trade-off before booking. The difference between a basic economy fare and the next class up is often less than the long-term value of the miles earned, especially when status thresholds and elite qualification are factored in.
