Real ID Enforcement Hits Full Stride: What Travelers Without One Face at the Airport
The Real ID deadline that was pushed back four times finally arrived on February 1, and TSA is now enforcing it at every domestic checkpoint in the country.
Travelers without a Real ID-compliant driver's license have two options: present a valid passport, or pay a $45 noncompliance fee that covers a 10-day travel window. After that, another fee is required.
Compliant licenses are marked with a gold star or black star in the upper corner. Standard licenses issued before the deadline no longer satisfy TSA identity requirements for boarding domestic flights.
The change has caught some travelers off guard. TSA reports a noticeable uptick in passengers arriving at checkpoints without valid identification, adding to the delays already caused by the DHS staffing shortage.
Applying for a Real ID requires a visit to your state DMV with proof of identity, Social Security number, and two documents showing your current address. Processing times vary by state, with some running four to six weeks for mail delivery.
