Kona Storm Hammers Hawaii: What Travelers Need to Know Right Now
A powerful kona storm swept across the Hawaiian Islands this weekend, flooding roads on Maui, grounding dozens of flights, and leaving some visitors stranded through midweek.
Maui took the hardest hit on Saturday, with Kihei experiencing significant flooding and the Road to Hana closing indefinitely. The Island of Hawaii faced sustained heavy rain and wind through Monday. Oahu issued a wind advisory but saw conditions improve faster.
Airport disruptions piled up quickly. By Sunday afternoon, Kahului Airport logged 25 delays and 27 cancellations. Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International saw 35 delays and 11 cancellations. Kona and Lihue airports reported smaller but notable disruptions.
Several airlines responded with flexible rebooking policies. Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines waived change fees for tickets purchased by March 11, covering travel through March 21. American Airlines offered similar waivers for March 12–15 bookings. United extended its rebooking window through March 22.
Major hotel chains — Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Marriott — had not issued broad cancellation waivers at press time. Travelers with nonrefundable reservations should contact properties directly.
Anyone with upcoming Hawaii plans should monitor flight status daily and check island-specific road closure updates before heading out.
